Printing your own shipping labels saves time and looks professional — but the first setup confuses many new sellers. This beginner's guide walks you through it, start to finish.
Step 1: Choose How You'll Print
- Thermal label printer: best for regular shipping — no ink, fast, prints 4x6 labels.
- Inkjet/laser printer: fine for low volume — print on A4 label sheets.
Step 2: Get the Right Labels
- Thermal printer → 4x6 thermal rolls.
- Inkjet/laser → matching A4 label sheets.
- Always match the label type to the printer.
Step 3: Generate the Label
Most Indian sellers use a courier platform or aggregator (or a marketplace dashboard). Enter the order details and it produces a ready-to-print label — usually a 4x6 PDF with the address and barcode.
Step 4: Set Print to Actual Size
- Select "Actual size" / 100%, never "fit to page".
- Scaling distorts the barcode and causes scan failures.
- For thermal, choose the 4x6 label format in the print dialog.
Step 5: Set the Darkness Right
On thermal printers, set darkness/density high enough for a crisp black barcode. Too light and it won't scan.
Step 6: Stick It On Properly
- Apply flat on a clean, smooth surface — not over tape or a seam.
- Smooth out wrinkles and press the edges down.
- Keep the barcode clear and uncovered.
Step 7: Do a Quick Check
- Is the address fully readable?
- Is the barcode crisp and flat?
- Are the edges stuck down?
Beginner Tips
- Buy a small pack first to test your printer before bulk-ordering.
- Keep spare rolls/sheets so you never run out mid-dispatch.
- Use waterproof labels if parcels face rain.
