A barcode that won't scan at the sorting hub means delays, manual handling, and sometimes a parcel returned to origin (RTO). For online sellers, that's lost money and unhappy customers. Here's why barcodes fail — and how to fix it.
1. Low Print Contrast
- Cause: faded thermal labels, low printer darkness, or old direct-thermal stock.
- Fix: increase printer darkness/density; use fresh, quality labels; store rolls away from heat.
2. Blurry or Smudged Print
- Cause: dirty printhead, wrong print speed, or ink that runs when wet.
- Fix: clean the printhead; slow the print speed; use smudge-resistant labels.
3. Wrong Size or Scaling
- Cause: the label was scaled to fit, distorting the barcode.
- Fix: print at 100% / actual size; use the correct label size (e.g. 4x6) for your courier.
4. No "Quiet Zone"
- Cause: text or edges too close to the barcode.
- Fix: leave clear white space either side of the barcode.
5. Curled, Wrinkled, or Peeling Labels
- Cause: weak adhesive or applying over tape/seams.
- Fix: use strong permanent adhesive labels; stick flat on a smooth surface, not over tape.
6. Shiny Covering Tape
- Cause: glossy tape over the barcode causes glare that blocks scanners.
- Fix: use waterproof labels instead of taping over; if you must cover, use matte tape and avoid the barcode.
Quick Pre-Ship Checklist
- Print dark and at 100% size.
- Stick flat, no wrinkles, on a clean surface.
- Keep the barcode clear of tape and edges.
- Do a test scan if you can.
